How Many People Can One Makeup Artist Realistically Do on a Wedding Morning?

One of the questions I get asked most - especially as bridal parties get bigger - is whether you need a second makeup artist on your wedding morning. And honestly, it's such a good thing to think about early, because the answer affects everything from your start time to how calm and enjoyable the whole morning feels.
Before I was a makeup artist, I worked as an event manager. So timelines, logistics, and making sure everything flows? That's genuinely something I love. I plan every wedding morning like it's an event - because it is. And just like any well-run event, the right team makes all the difference.
Here's my honest guide to figuring out what you actually need.

What's a realistic number for one artist?
Most artists, myself included, take on around 3-5 services per morning. That number isn't arbitrary - it's what allows enough time for proper skin preparation, attention to detail, and a morning that doesn't feel rushed.
Within that window, there's also room for the small things that always happen: a little extra time on a tricky hairstyle, a quiet moment with the bride, minor adjustments that come up naturally. That breathing room matters more than people realise.
Once you go beyond 5 services with one artist, the morning starts to get tight. We're talking potential 5am starts, very little space between appointments, and a morning that can begin to feel more like a production line than something to enjoy. That's not what I want for any of my brides.
It's not just about the number of people
The headcount is only one part of the picture. Your timeline also depends on:
What time you need to be completely ready
How long you're travelling to the ceremony
How early your bridal party is realistically willing to start
For larger groups, squeezing everything into one artist's schedule can sometimes mean a very early start for everyone - or a morning that feels a little pressured even when everything technically runs on time. Neither is ideal on a day that should feel special from the moment you wake up.

My personal approach
I personally take on up to 4 services per morning. That's a deliberate choice - it means I can work at a calm, steady pace and give each person the attention they deserve.
Especially in those quiet, getting-ready moments that go so fast and that you'll want to remember.
For larger bookings, I work alongside a small, trusted team of artists who share my approach and aesthetic. And if a second or third artists are involved, I take care of everything - the schedule, the timing, the coordination. You don't have to think about any of it on the day. That part is genuinely my favourite thing to do.
When a second artist is worth considering
Bringing in a second artist is often the best decision for a relaxed, enjoyable morning. It's especially worth thinking about when:
You have 5 or more people getting makeup (and/or hair)
Your timeline is on the tighter side
You'd prefer a later, more comfortable start time
Having two artists working in parallel means everything flows naturally rather than in one long chain - which can make a significant difference in how the morning actually feels. I nearly always recommend a second artist for larger parties, and it's something I'm always happy to talk through with you early in the planning process.
A few practical things to know
If you do bring in a second artist, there are a couple of things worth being aware of:
There may be an additional travel fee depending on location
You'll need enough space for two setups in your getting-ready room
Timing and scheduling will need a little more coordination
This is all something I manage for you - so even with two artists, the morning still feels seamless and calm. You just get to enjoy it.

Your morning sets the tone for everything
Your wedding morning isn't just about getting everyone ready. It's about creating a space where you can feel calm, present, and actually enjoy those hours before you walk down the aisle. The getting-ready photos, the little moments with your people, the quiet excitement - all of that happens in the morning. It deserves to be looked after.
Having the right number of artists is a big part of making that possible.
Not sure what you need?
Every wedding morning is a little different, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. If you're unsure how many artists you might need or how to structure your morning, it's something I'm always happy to guide you through - no obligation, just a honest conversation.
