A Makeup Artist's Guide to Planning a Calm Wedding Morning

Your wedding morning sets the tone for the entire day.

Over the years working as a bridal makeup artist in Perth, I’ve seen every kind of morning - from rushed hotel rooms packed with people, to beautifully calm spaces where everyone feels relaxed and excited.

The difference often comes down to a few small decisions made during the planning stage.

If you want a wedding morning that feels relaxed, organised and genuinely enjoyable, here are a few things to consider.

Start With the Atmosphere

Many brides spend months planning the ceremony and reception, but the wedding morning is often overlooked.

In reality, it’s one of the most important parts of the day.

It’s the moment you spend with your closest people before everything begins. Creating a calm atmosphere will help you feel present and grounded before walking down the aisle.

Think about what would make the morning feel good for you:

• Natural light in the room

• Enough space for everyone getting ready

• A relaxed timeline with no rushing

• Music or quiet moments with your bridal party

When the morning feels calm, everything else tends to fall into place.

Choose the Right Getting Ready Space

One of the most common issues I see on wedding mornings is simply not having enough space.

If you have a bridal party of four or five, plus two artists, family members, a florist dropping off flowers and possibly a photographer arriving later, a small hotel room can quickly become crowded.

When choosing your getting ready space, consider:

• Is there enough natural light for makeup?

• Is there room for artists to set up comfortably?

• Is there space for dresses, bags and shoes?

• Will everyone feel relaxed rather than crowded?

A slightly larger room or suite can make a huge difference to how the morning feels.

Avoid Wedding Tasks on the Morning

I know this can be hard because sometimes you just run out of time! See if you can delegate as much as you can.

Your wedding morning is not the time to be:

• Making flower arrangements

• Writing speeches

• Running errands

• Coordinating vendors

These tasks can quickly create stress and distractions.

Instead, try to organise everything the day before so the morning can be focused on getting ready, enjoying the moment and spending time with your bridal party.

Eat and Stay Hydrated

It sounds simple, but it’s surprisingly easy to forget.

Make sure you have small, easy foods available throughout the morning - things you can nibble on while getting ready.

Fruit, pastries, yoghurt or light snacks are perfect. If your getting ready time is running close to the afternoon, I would also suggest a light lunch like sandwiches or sushi as you need something substantial as you won't be eating until dinner!

Allow Extra Time Before You Leave

One of the best pieces of advice I give my brides is to build in a buffer of at least one hour between finishing hair and makeup and leaving for the ceremony.

This extra time allows for:

• Getting dressed

• Touch ups

• Photos with your bridal party

• A quiet moment before heading out

Without this buffer, the morning can feel rushed right at the end.

Trust the Timeline

Professional artists will usually create a schedule for the morning so everyone knows when their service begins. I send this ahead of time to my brides and for them to communicate with their bridal party and anyone who is involved in getting their makeup and hair done in the morning.

This helps keep the morning organised and ensures the entire bridal party is ready on time.

A clear timeline also allows you to relax knowing everything is running smoothly.

The Goal: Feeling Like Yourself

At the end of the day, the goal of a wedding morning isn’t just beautiful hair and makeup.

It’s about creating a space where you feel calm, supported and excited for the day ahead.

When the morning is well planned, it becomes one of the most special parts of the wedding - the quiet moments before everything begins.
